Mail Order Buggy

The Black Manufacturing Co. of Chicago produced highwheelers under the name of Chicago Motor Buggy from 1908 to 1909. Thought by some to be a transitional vehicle from the horse-drawn buggy, the highwheeler actually originated in the Chicago area in response to the need for a motor vehicle with road clearance suitable for deeply rutted out-of-town roads.

The Black was marketed widely by mail order from 1908 to 1910 by the Black Manufacturing Company of Chicago.  Catalogs for the car indicate that orders would be “shipped F.O.B. our plant in Auburn, Indiana.”

This 1909, Chicago Motor Buggy, Type 12, 2 passenger, Runabout has a two-cylinder,100.2 cubic inch, 14 Hp, horizontally opposed, air-cooled engine with a 4 1/8 inch bore and 3 3/4 inch stroke.  The price tag attached to the Type 12  was marked at $450.
